16th chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated
1st Chapter in the South Eastern Region
Pi was chartered as the first chapter in the South Eastern Region on April 6, 1921 at Meharry Medical College.
The sophisticated charter members include:
Leila May Lyon
Mildred Geraldine Harper
Wilhelmina Bowles
Georgia A. Blakemore
Clarice E. Bartlett
Druecilla A. Varnadoe
A. Marie O.C. Williams
[Meharry President John J. Mullowney gladly approved the petition of these trailblazers to form a chapter stating, “What is needed here is more cooperation and more of a democratic spirit, a spirit which looks to the good of all rather than to the social privileges of a few”. ]
Pi Chapter initially included both undergraduate and graduate members from Fisk University and Meharry Medical College. In 1926, during the Ninth Annual Boule of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, action was approved to separate chapters based on these membership classification. Pi Chapter continued for undergraduate students at Fisk University, as the graduate members chartered Alpha Delta Omega in 1927. Kappa Lambda Omega proudly serves as the current advising graduate chapter.
